It's not always easy to look at a room and know what to do with it, unless you're going to gut it and start over. Knowing what to focus on and what will bring new life and character to a space goes a long way.
Below, is a bathroom we took from builder grade to character filled on a minimal budget.
Here are five things to focus on when choosing to upgrade a space.

NO. 1 ~ Create an Inspiration Board or Palette

Knowing where to start can be difficult, that's why create an inspiration board for yourself will help you identify what you're drawn to.
In this case, a soft palette with bold accents was what came from a design consultation. We knew we wanted the classic hex tiles, the character and flare from a Joanna Gaines, Magnolia wallpaper and a pop of a bold colour.
This gave us our theme and overall direction as we moved forward.
NO. 2 ~ Decide What is Staying and what's Going - with intention!
One of the biggest hurdles when freshening up the space is trying to decide what to keep and what to get rid of. When trying to be budget friendly, it's important to keep as much as you can. The toilet may not look nice now - but once you freshen up around it - it will look much different! The bathroom vanity may seem outdated, but a fresh coat of paint can work wonders!
NO. 3 ~ Focus on Quality, not Quantity
It seems that many times, quantity is favoured over quality. We need to replace everything! Instead of - if we spent a little money on X and a little on Y - it will really freshen the space! Things like a new faucet can bring a whole different feel into a space. Even the paint brand you choose can make an absolute difference in the end quality. Choose wisely and you will be guaranteed a freshened space - with minimal overall costs. I would much rather choose a paint that is thick and durable than a paint that will leave streaks, drip or even allow for dirt and grime to build up.
NO. 4 ~ Follow your Vision Through and Don't Rush
When working on renovations it's easy to get consumed by what's not done yet and rush the process. It's so essential to remember and reflect back to your inspiration board and remind yourself of what all the current effort is working towards. If you don't keep this overall vision and plan in mind you will choose cheap easy work arounds or make the decision to do something halfway because "you'll get to it later". Know that the work you're putting in today will reap harvest soon!
NO. 5 ~ Enjoy the Experience
It's fun - and a blessing - to be able to upgrade any space. It's a treat to be able to bring in your own character and flavour into a room. Any renovation will bring challenges and frustrations but the reward is waiting at the end. And then, you will have a new space that brings warmth and cozy into your home.
